In December 1996, UCB Insect Hotline Operator Eddie Dunbar was invited to write a proposal for a web-based outreach project. Originally named "Exploring Urban Biodiversity", the project became known simply as "City Bugs".
The program recruited students from Oakland Schools to study at UC Berkeley and to the generation of the web-based field guide "Insects of the San Francisco Bay Area", it pioneered innovative web technologies and engaged students from local schools in an exploration of urban insect fauna.
When CityBugs funding ran low in late 1998, Dunbar signed on with Oakland Schools directly and received funding for the "Exploring California Insects" website. Dunbar volunteered with CityBugs until mid-1999, however the field guide never regained quality tech support, and it was eventually abandoned altogether.
CityBugs, and "Insects of the San Francisco Bay Area", remains one of the great outreach efforts in the history of UCB's College of Natural Resources. In its third year the program received the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Outreach.
