Cockroaches are best known as household pests. But most species never come
near homes and spend their existence outside, feeding harmlessly on plants
or fungi. Females lay their eggs in oötheca, a specialized egg cases.
Cockroaches avoid light and are usually nocturnal (active mostly at night).
Some tropical species are diurnal (active mostly during the day) and brightly
marked.
