Cockroaches are
dorsoventrally
compressed (flattened). Forewings (tegmina) are tough, and leathery.
The first dorsal thoracic segment (pronotum) covers the head. Antennae are threadlike
(filiform). The basal
leg segments (coxae) are elongate, and quite large, making the insect
well-adapted for a running (cursorial) lifestyle.
Cerci (appendages at
posterior of abdomen) are multi-segmented.
