Many members of this family are very colorful. Buprestids are wood
borers and have unique body shapes as both adults and larvae. Adults are
bullet-shaped and the body tapers posteriorly. The pronotum closely fits
the head and elytra. The antennae are usually short and sawtoothed. Larvae
have an expanded thorax which gives the larvae the common name of flat-headed
borers.
They range in body length from 2 to 40 mm. Many are metallic or bronzed.
Tarsi are 5-5-5. Larvae are known as "flatheaded borers."
