The Banded Alder Borer is described in California Insects by Jerry Powell,
and on page 304, as: "ADULT: Large (BL 25-38 mm); slender with very long
antennae (1-2x the BL); beautifully banded, pale bluish white and black.
LARVA: In wood of alder, ash, and other hardwoods. RANGE: Coast Ranges. This
species was popularly known as the California Laurel Borer, although California
Laurel (Umbellularia) evidently is not a primary host. The beetles
have been observed on several occasions to congregate at freshly painted
buildings during hot spells."
