All the species are similar in appearance. They are always black.
Their eyes are divided into upper and lower portions so they can see above
and below the water surface. Their antennas are very short and somewhat clubbed
and have the third segment greatly expanded. Their middle and hind legs are
short and broad, adapted for swimming, while their forelegs are long and
prehensile.
