DESCRIPTION

Pictured: Darkling Beetle (Tenebrionidae)
Diversity: Beetles are the most diverse lifeform on the planet. Size: Some are smaller than some protozoa. Some are 8 inches long! Wings: The elytra (hardened forewings of beetles) distinguish beetles from all other insect groups. The elytra are heavily sclerotized (hardened). Also, they come together to form a seam in the middle of the beetle's back. The seam runs from the base of the abdomen toward its posterior tip.
