Staphylinids may be recognized by their short elytra which
expose up to 6 abdominal segments. The body is usually elongate and parallel
sided. They may be distinguished from
Dermaptera
which they superficially resemble by their lack of cerci. They may further
be distinguished from the
Embioptera
by their lack of an expanded tarsomere on the forelegs. They range
in size from 1-20 mm.
