Robber flies
are predators. They spend their hours waiting for a flying insect to pass
by. Like dragonflies they capture insects on the wing. However, they may
capture prey nearly as large as them, and so, may tumble to the ground in
an attempt to subdue it. Adult robber flies are predatory on other insects
and are capable of capturing them on the wing. Even large wasps and dragonflies
are not free from robber fly attack. Larvae live in the soil or damp wood
where they are predatory on other insect larvae.
