Bee flies
resemble bees superficially, but they are flies and possess no sting.
Generally, they are stout-bodied and densely haired. Many have
a very well developed, long proboscis which extends straight forward
and is used to suck nectar. Wings: Held characteristically
outstretched. Many species have patterned wing markings. Veins
curve toward the costal margin of the wing-tip. M1 ends behind wing tip.
There are 3 or 4 posterior cells. Discal cell present. Anal cell open or
closed near wing margin. Antennae: The 3rd antennal segment varies
in shape. Size: Bee flies are mostly medium to large.
