Humpbacked in Lateral View
Adult BL 3mm,
including wings; usually tan to dark brown in color; similar in appearance
to pomace flies
(Drosophilidae),
with which they are most often confused; however, phorids lack the fruit
fly's characteristic red eyes; also phorid thoraces have a conspicuous arch,
combined with a small head that give it a humpbacked appearance; wings have
two heavily sclerotized veins at the front margin; the rest of the wings
are very weak and are without cross-veins.
Adults walk
freely about, and when disturbed run rapidly rather than flying.
