Adult females are blood-sucking, attacking various vertebrates. Males feed at flowers. Males tend to have the eyes meeting dorsally (holoptic) while females have the eyes more separated dorsally. Tabanid larvae are aquatic, or are found in moist situations where they are carnivorous on other insect larvae, worms, etc.
