Crane Flies resemble mosquitoes (Family
Culicidae)
in overall appearance. However, Crane Flies have
long delicate legs which are easily lost.
Halteres
may be long, conspicuous, and clubbed at the end. They are usually larger
than flies of other families and have a V-shaped transverse suture on their
mesonotum. They also have two anal veins which meet the wing margin. Many
of the other more common flies have at most only one anal vein meet the wing
margin. The
mouthparts are not formed for biting.
