Cicadas are
usually larger than other Homopterans (25-50 mm) and may be recognized by
their membranous forewings with prominent venation. Nymphal cicadas feed
on plant roots. Species of this family are well known for their ability to
produce sound which is made by the males in their efforts to attract females.
In most species, sound production is by a pair of tymbals located on the
anterior edge of the abdomen. Periodical cicadas are remarkable for their
long developmental times which may last up to seventeen years.
