The Yellow-legged Paper Wasp and yellowjackets construct nests in similar
places (e.g., under the eaves of houses). Therefore there is sometimes confusion
in which group is present. The yellow-legged paper wasp builds
small
nests, which do not usually exceed 4 inches in diameter. These nests
have
combs
which are open and which face downward. In most cases no more than a
dozen individuals are present. Collecting: Mischocyttarus is reported
to not sting in defense of its nest. However, individuals will sting if provoked
and individuals in large colonies will swarm in response to disturbance (personal
experiences of the author). As with all stinging or biting arthropods, extreme
caution should be used when collecting. All biting and stinging insects should
be dispatched immediately upon collection to avoid stings and allergic reactions.
