They are not frequently encountered in the Bay Area. However, beating vegetation
may sometimes produce a few. Individuals most commonly encountered in the
our urban areas were probably introduced as bio-control agents in gardens.
Some species are wingless and can be found in dry grass. Characteristically,
though, mantids are arboreal (tree-dwelling).
