Ant Lions are so named because the larvae prey on ants. Also called "doodle
bugs", the larvae walk backwards in sandy soil, and aided by a strong head
and jaws they throw debris about until they lay at the bottom of a funnel-shaped
depression. There, they wait for passing insects to fall in where they are
seized by the Ant Lion's formidable jaws. Ant Lion mandibles are hollowed
and digestive enzymes are secreted into the prey which becomes liquefied
internally and once sucked dry the empty carcass is thrown clear of the pit.
