DESCRIPTION

This order consists predominantly of plant-feeding (herbivorous) forms. However, there are some omnivorous or strictly carnivorous Orthopteran groups. Different Orthopteran taxa display various sound production and perception structures.
Collecting: This order contains a number of groups which may be found in various habitats. Acrididae are frequently encountered in fields and may be swept from vegetation or netted on the ground. Tettigoniidae are often encountered on vegetation and may be hand netted or beaten from vegetation. Most nymphs should be stored in alcohol while adults should usually be pinned through the right tegmen if they are not soft bodied.
Identification: Most members of this group are characterized by their well developed hind femora which are modified for jumping. They have a well developed pronotum and are usually, hypognathus. Cerci, when evident, consist of a single segment.
