Tricho = hair; ptera = wings
Pronounced Tr-kop'-ter-a
Identification: Adult caddisflies may be identified by their hairy wings, their long
filiform antennae that are usually held straight out from the head and their
overall resemblance to moths. The wings are held rooflike over the abdomen.
They tend to be rather drab brown in color, although some groups may have
attractive markings on their wings. Caddisfly larvae may be identified by
their anal prolegs which project from the very end of the body and by their
larval cases when present. Mouthparts are chewing, palpi are large, but in
some adults they are non-functioning.
